Event Review: Breathe Fresh Indoors Campaign 2019

This world environment day, Rolling Nature successfully conducted Breathe Fresh Indoor Campaign, 2019, and supported the Fight Air Pollution theme of UN Environment. We had a proactive campaign, both online and offline.

Rolling Nature & Tata BlueScope steel came together for the same cause, and our Co-Founder Vandana Chaudhary was invited there to give a talk on “Indoor Air pollution” on the occasion of World Environment Day. The event at TATA also included a plant kiosk and green gifting for all. Also, the main campaign fun event, was held on 8th June, at Balewadi Office which aimed at plant distribution drive, awareness talks on indoor air pollution, plant exhibition & sale, plant games, quizzes, lucky draws, kids drawing competition and more. The event attracted quite an attention locally, and people loved the concept of such events. The highlights also included #breathefreshindoors Campaign FB Photo contest and Giveaway.

The campaign raised concerns about outdoor pollution with same tone of UNEP. But it mainly addressed the striking researched facts about pollution in closed spaces especially in urban settings. Did You Know? We spend 90% of our time indoors. There is 5 times more pollution indoors. Indoor plants are cheapest best natural solution to significantly improve Indoor Air Quality (IAQ). They oxygenate, humidify, and remove harmful toxic pollutants, VOC's dust, bacteria & molds. Plants Increase Efficiency and Productivity and reduces Sick building syndrome by 25%. Plants reduce stress, minor illnesses and background noise. Many of us are unaware of all these facts.

Our Co-Founder Vandana actively led the campaign at various levels along with Rolling Nature Team members and volunteers from various walks of life. She insisted on use of Air Purifying Plants indoors, which benefit the occupants in several ways at home or workspaces, to lead a healthy lifestyle & enhanced work efficiency. She said “Mostly people have plants outdoors or in balconies. When I ask them they say they have plenty of plants or green area. But when it comes to closed spaces they don’t have much answers. We undermine the use of plants in closed spaces, or don’t understand the science of these natural air purifiers and humidifiers. There’s a list of plants that NASA has issued and these particular species work great to remove toxic pollutants that are emitted from interiors, also they emit high oxygen content. When inside, we have stagnant stale air, with very low oxygen levels. During day, the outdoor pollution too reaches at very high rate. Also in evening when we open our windows for ventilation, we should understand that at that hour most plants are giving carbon dioxide. So, we should be very much concerned about us and our families, and the quality of air and content of oxygen that we get to breathe.”

She was worried about the indoor air quality and emphasized to fight air pollution indoors. She further added “We can measure other parameters with an indoor pollution meter. We have readily available statistics for outdoor pollutants through Air Quality Index at any given place. But it’s difficult to know what we breathe indoors. We can definitely measure the air quality indoors too, with air quality monitors. However, it’s essential to have few air purifying plants to treat our polluted indoor air. NASA recommends 1 air purifying plant per 100 square feet. It a can drastically improve the quality of air we breathe.  We don’t need to buy expensive artificial air purifiers and humidifiers from market when we can maintain the air quality with these beautiful plants naturally.”

The campaign was well received and appreciated. June is the time when Rolling Nature actively gets involved on such environmental concerns along with UN and also with other partners.
